Bitter Guana Cay to Rock Sound - day 205

Today was our crossing back across Exuma Sound to Eluthera. We had some nice east winds predicted for the day which would give us a nice wind angle to cross the sound. We wanted to leave early to give ourselves lots of time, but this meant going through to Lumber Cut at not the ideal time with the tides. It was an outgoing tide still coming into low tide. The wind wasn't directly opposed to the current, but as it turned out, it was still close enough to making things sketchy. I think we'd been getting a bit cocky as we'd had such good luck with the cuts up to this point, it didn't seem like it was going to be much trouble.

So we raised sailed at daybreak and pulled up the anchor and sailed out. The current was with us at least, but did it ever get messy through the cut. It was about as bad as all the horror stories we'd heard, and we were quickly humbled. We did manage to sail through it, but it was knocking us all over the place in the steep waves. Had some water up into our cockpit from the stern (which we almost never have, even in very large seas coming down the coast), knocked our swim ladder into the water too which has never happened before. I was expecting the waves if there were any to be a short affair, but it went on pretty far out. We eventually made it out and back into calm water, but we'll heed the timing of the tides much closer in the future.

After that ordeal, the sail across the sound was super nice. Perfect winds, and a great angle. Pretty close to the wind, but just a single tack across the sound. Once we got to Davis Channel and on our way up to rock sound the wind was pretty much on the nose, but we had the current with us, and it was a fun upwind sail with the current helping us along.

We got into Rock Sound and put the sails away. We made our way over to the far anchorage in front of the rental and carefully found a good place to anchor as we planned to be there for the next couple of weeks. We have family coming and we conveniently had the rental just on shore from where we were anchored.
