Pensocola Cay to Allans Cay to Fox Town - day 270

Winds were much lighter in the morning, and coming from the north directly now, so we had much better protection where we were at Pensocola Cay.

I decided to try a new technique sailing off anchor since we were close to the cliffs. Normally we raise the main sail but leave it loose, pull up anchor, then sheet in and start sailing. But this requires you to often go a little past the anchor before picking up enough speed to have steerage, and we didn't have room for that here. So because the wind was blowing us directly away from the cliffs, I simply pulled up anchor slowly (so as not to pull the boat past the anchor spot) with all sails down. We kind of just sat there for a moment, and then very slowly started drifting away from land. Then we just rolled out the headsail and were able to make our way along Pensocola Cay to Allans Cay (same island, different names? abbreviated name? not sure). This wouldn't have worked to raise the main, as you need to be pointed at least somewhat to wind to do that, but worked well enough for this.

The sail was short but beautiful right along the shore. We anchored in the deeper part of the anchorage (at the mouth) of Allans Cay as it shallows up pretty quickly (on the charts at least). It was a ways to shore, so we sailed the dingy in which worked quite well. Perfect winds for it too, all nice and easy.

We hiked over to the signing tree, which I didn't realize was going to be quite so crazy. We didn't bring a sign though! Should have thought about that before hand. It was a wonderful hike and a very beautiful spot, glad we stopped here.

We got back to the boat and then sailed off anchor and headed over to Fox Town. We need a few provisions yet before crossing back (drinking water, snacks, and stuff to eat while underway). Also there is a cool restaurant there we want to check out as well.

It's pretty shallow coming into Fox Town, but we made it in at low tide without any issues. A couple 7 foot spots, but that is pretty normal here. Anchor set really well and we were in a nice flat comfortable anchorage finally.

We've had our eye on a weather window to sail from here to Beaufort, NC, leaving either April 16th or 17th. If that continues to look good over the next couple of days, we'll take it and make a big jump north, back to the land of plenty (or overconsumption depending on how you look at it).
