After spending Monday resting up from our passage I was ready to check out our surroundings. Sheepshead Bay Yacht Club was nice but was clearly still setting up for the season. One of the members told me that they were about three weeks behind schedule. It was fine but meant the shower rooms were being used for storage and there were no picnic tables or anything ashore yet. It got more and more put together over the week we were there and I'm sure it's really nice once it's fully up and running.
Aria and I went for a walk in the neighbourhood around the yacht club. There was a walkway along the water and a nice park with a beautiful Holocaust memorial at the end of the bay. The bay was packed with moring balls and there were three yacht clubs in a row along the water. There were also lots of restaurants including a lovely little french bakery that we were very happy to try out.
Since we had only spent one day in Manhatten on our way south we were excited to do some more touristy stuff this time around. Our first order of business in that regard was going to a show. None of us had ever been to a musical before and we'd heard really good things about Hamilton so we decided to check it out. We were not disapointed! The theater was beautiful and show was super entertaining. It was also really neat seeing it in New York since that's where most of the play is set.
After a day spent doing work and school work we were ready for another touristy adventure. To get form Sheepshead Bay to Manhatten it's a 20min walk followed by and hour long subway ride. It's one train so an easy trek just kind of time consuming so not something we wanted to do every day. Our next trip into the city was to the Museum of Natural History. Honestly it's worth a visit just for the architecture alone.
After the museum we took a lovely walk through Central Park. It's so crazy seeing skyscrapers while being completely surrounded by nature. It's a really beautiful and amazing spot.
The start of the week was very rainy. So rainy in fact that it derailed out plans for getting home. All the New York State Canal System locks were supposed to open for the season on May 16th. We were planning on spending our week in New York and then heading up to the canal and home. Unfortunately that plan it now off. There was so much rain that the water level is too high to open then locks yet and in even worse news one of the locks that we need to go through to get to the Oswego canal was damaged during the rainstorm and won't be fixed for 4 - 5 weeks. So it looks like we are going to be spending a lot longer in NYC than we originally thought.
We decided that instead of spending more time where we were we would splurge a little and head to a dock closer to Manhatten once our week at Sheepshead Bay was up.
Before we left though we wanted to check out Coney Island. It was a long but doable walk from the yacht club so we headed there for some lunch at Nathan's Famous (it's been serving food at Coney Island since 1916) and a visit to the New York City Aquarium which is located right along the boardwalk. And just like that our first week in New York City was done.
