We left Cap-à-l'Aigle around 6am in order to catch the out-flowing current. No wind to start but it picked up a bit later in the morning and so we were able to make good way downwind on just the genoa. We saw more minke whales and got a picture of one this time. We also came across a pod of seals which was really neat. They all kind of bob around watching us as we passed on by, splashing in the water when they had enough of watching us. And you can hear them all breathing heavily as though they were annoyed with us (but I think that's just how they breath).
Then we got into some fog which again is new to us. A bit eerie floating through it. The wind dropped a bit and the current started working against us as the tide changed. So we put up the main and were able to still make way. I think we floated through the fog for an hour or so, sounding our horn as we could hear but not see other boats around. Once we got into the bay we came around, and put our sails down before motoring into the channel at Tadussac. At one moment out depth went from 400 feet to 9 feet and we had a bit of a freak out, but quickly double checked out position and heading and all was ok, so not sure what that was. Maybe a whale, maybe some debris? After that we basically came out of the fog and into the bay. Looking back we could see the masts of 2 other sailboats that were behind us in the fog. We aren't a fan of the fog, and hopefully it's not as bad once we get back to warmer waters.
I did check the sea temperature map, and this 11C water is just in this area at the mouth of the Tadussac River (technically more of a fjord) where really cold water is exiting into the St Lawrence. The sea warms up again to 20C once we get around the Gaspe. Which is good because our boat is not made for this cold water, and we are getting a lot of condensation on the hull.
We walked over to the Marine Mammal Interpretation Centre and took a tour of that. Got some more information about the local whereabouts of whales. They had a map that showed the large pod of beluga whales we saw on the way up. There are lots of whales all the way up and around the Gaspe, so I expect we'll see many more yet.
Had dinner at a microbrewery a short walk from the marina, and retired back to the boat to watch some Delicious in Dungeon (excellent anime!)
We are going to stay another night at the marina here so we have a day of rest, and then we'll plan to continue on to Rimouski the following day.
