We finally set out from Halifax, slightly hopeful for some good winds to make it to Lunenburg. Those winds didn't materialize though. We put up sails after coming out of the club, but they were light, and only getting lighter. So we put them away and motored out through the calm.
I noticed a tiny bit of coolant under the engine after getting into Halifax, and decided to take a peak to see if any more was leaking. And to my dismay, there was a rather large puddle of coolant under the engine now. Unfortunately there was no wind, and a very large amount of swell which makes the whole being below working on the engine very uncomfortable. After poking around and trying to find the source of the leak I finally identified a pipe fitting on the top of the engine that was slightly loose, and the rubber seal had worked its way back, and so it was dripping pretty reliably from there. Of course, I worked my way up from the bottom where I saw the coolant first, so this was the last place I inspected. Thankfully it was any easy fix and it stopped leaking after pushing it all back into place. The pipe fittings on these volvo's are rather annoying. Nice when they work I guess, but rather prone to leaking and coming apart on a shaky 2 cylinder diesel engine.
Anyways after what seemed like half a day cleaning that up, and getting the mess down below back together, I was feeling a bit seasick to top everything off. Sat up top while we motored on through the giant swell, and started to feel a bit better after a few hours. I'm almost never sea sick thankfully, but down below fretting about the engine in large swell seems to do it.
We'd decided on our bail out plan to anchor at Clarke Island about half way along as the winds and sea state both sucked. The wind did finally came in a bit as we were nearing the anchorage, so we could at least sail the last hour and a bit to anchor, which was much more comfortable.
The anchorage was tight, but very calm and beautiful. No problem setting the anchor, and happy to finally be stopped. Just one of those hard long days. Had a nice evening at anchor, and got a few more boat projects completed. Did an oil change and cleaned up the engine bay. Had a nice dinner, and got to bed pretty early.
