Rock Sound to Shroud Cay, Exumas - day 178

Our second day in Rock Sound we woke up to a pretty wavy anchorage. We got into town for some provisions and I got a bit of extra water to top up our tanks. After that we motored over to the other side of the Sound to find a much more protected anchorage from the waves. Aria and I went ashore and spent some time on the beach building a castle of sorts. It was a nice evening.

We also finalize some exciting plans. Theone's sister's family is going to be flying down in a couple of weeks to visit. We have booked an on shore rental for us in Rock Sound for when they are down, and we'll spend a week with them on land in Eleuthera which we are really looking forward to. With that in mind, we've decided not to spend more time here in Rock Sound, because we'll be back soon enough, and instead head straight over to the Exumas for now. We'll spend some time in the Exumas, and then hop back over to Rock Sound in Eleuthera, and then we'll decide where to go from there. Either back to the Exumas, or we might head north from there. We'll see how we are feeling when the time comes.

But for now that means we are crossing the Exuma Sound and heading west. We picked up anchor pretty early in the morning (although early for us is generally not that early as at least 4 other boats had already left before us), and sailed off anchor in some very light winds. I was hoping for some better winds, but after floating south out of the anchorage at ~1 knot, we were only managing 2 or 3 knots close hauled towards Exuma Sound. I stubbornly held out for better winds for a couple of hours, but eventually had to call uncle and we turned on the motor.

We were motoring along at a brisk speed of nearly 9 knots with the current pulling us out for a short bit. The winds were super light and we ended up motoring across the entire Exuma Sound. Half way across we made a course correction as we decided to head to Shroud Cay instead of higher up. We've been very indecisive lately and our plans tend to change hour to hour. We came into Wax Cay Cut with a knot or two of current pulling us in, but nothing too dramatic. The colour of the water here is completely insane, the dark blues of the ocean, coming into the clear turquoise blues of the banks is something to behold. We followed our charts and came around into the mooring field at Shroud Cay where we picked up a mooring ball. Shroud Cay is part of the Exuma Land and Sea park which is a large part of the Exumas which are somewhat like a large national park. No fishing is allowed in the park, and so there is a lot of great marina life to see here.

And just like that, we are in the Exumas. We have some plans to row around Shroud Cay tomorrow, and then we'll start working south from here in the next day or two.
