As we relaxing on anchor at Gin Sur Mer on our first day after crossing over, a plan was being formulated by the group of kid boats to head out that evening for an overnight sail to the Berry Islands, specifically to White Cay about half way down the chain of the Berry Islands. The plan was to leave at 8pm, and to arrive around 3pm the next day to catch slack tide to come into the cut. The winds were looking pretty good for it, and there were some strong easterly winds coming later in the forecast, so it would be good to get east now while we could.
So everyone got ready and we all started leaving in the evening and setting sail. The winds were good, and we sailed pretty much the entire way. Unfortunately for us, the wind was dead behind us, which is one of my least favorite points of sail. We just aren't setup for doing any kind of wing on wing setup, and gybing the large main is dangerous for us, so we always end up way off the wind. So it was a little frustrating in that regard, and it made the sail a bit longer than we had hoped. The sailing was pretty good, but it was a long one, and we were still pretty tired from the push to get across to The Bahamas in the first place, so it seemed longer than it was.
Near the top of the Berry Islands our wind started to run out, and we were running a bit behind schedule to make it to the cut at White Cay, so we motored for a while thinking we might still make it. But we were just a little too slow, and wouldn't have gotten there until 4pm. In hindsight it probably would have been fine, but not something we wanted to risk near end of day while being all tired and worn out. So we ducked in a Soldier Cay, and anchored there. A bit rolly with the winds but it calmed down at night and was just fine. We'll spend the night here, and then plan to do the tiny jump down to White Cay tomorrow afternoon.
After 106NM sail we were all pretty tired, and I think I was a bit frustrated at still being in "go-go-go" mode even after finally getting to the Bahamas. I had pictured slowing down a bit finally when we made it across, but I guess ultimately we still had a way to go before we get to the places where we can stop and truly relax a little bit. Sometime soon I hope! Another early bedtime tonight...
