Carters Beach to Shelburne - day 50

Kind of a funny wind day today. We were expecting some good easterly winds with a storm that was coming in this weekend. We raised anchor super early just before sunrise, and headed out. Carter's beach is exceptionally beautiful and worth the stop.

We left super early because we wanted to make a big hop to Shelburne, and get into the protected bay before the winds got too wild. Some predictions were talking about 40 knot gusts in the evening, and obviously we aren't too keen on being out in that.

We motored the first bit, hopeful for wind I put up sail as we came out of the anchorage area, but no wind to be found, just rather large seas. So it was uncomfortable motoring for the first couple of hours. Eventually the wind started to fill a bit, and we put up sail and continued on under sail the rest of the way. Winds light so not great, but enough to keep moving. As we came around and starting making our way west, we ended up with some really poor downwind tack angles. This was due to waves. On the westward tack we couldn't really point down where we usually would in those winds because the waves just knocked us all around, so we had to point pretty high up to avoid that. So we made our way jibing downwind at a pretty bad angle until we could make our way straight down into the bay. As we entered the bay area the wind finally started building and so we ended up having to drop the main, and continued down the 10 nautical mile channel to Shelburne on just the genoa.

We booked a slip for the night, and got into the marina with a little bit of excitement. I came into the dock a little too far off, and a little too slow, and the wind was gusting pretty good pushing us off. So we had to abort and back out and give it a second try. Attempt number two, although not great, did at least get us onto the dock.

So we are here now, secured to the dock, and we'll wait out the weather for a couple of days. Looks like it will be windy overnight. The rain started in the evening, and will probably continue into tomorrow. We could use the time to relax again after a couple long hops.
