So we ended up spending a lot of time in Jensen Beach (7 days!). We originally planned just a few nights to re-provision, but then the weather was getting ugly so we just stayed, and then stayed longer.
We did rent a car there for 2 days which was super handy. We did a ton of running around and provisioning, which ended up being exhausting. Shopping takes forever... But useful, we are much more outfitted than before.
At first our stay was really nice, well protected from the north winds, and it was pretty light anyways. But the winds were gusting in the 20 knots range for the past few days, and starting coming from the east. There is a bit of fetch from the east at the mooring field, and this presented a fair bit of wave action. The boat was rolly all day, and all night, and all day. The wind just never let up and it was getting rather exhausting and uncomfortable.
We did row over to the other side of the bay (0.8NM against the wind, a hard row, but easily doable) and did a little paddle through some mangroves over there. A fun outing and nice to get off the boat.
We were considering spending yet another night because moving in these winds isn't much fun either, but we were sick enough of it, so we decided to just go. As expected the going wasn't great, wavy and windy enough to get sprayed in the cockpit every few waves even just motoring along slowly. We got down to the next bridge only 4NM away, and decided to tuck into that anchorage which has good easterly protection. This was a good choice and finally we enjoyed some comfort. No fetch here, and so it was much more comfortable. And lots of room, so we can just let out tons of scope and our anchor looks to be holding just fine in these 20+ knot gusts. Should have moved here a couple of nights ago in retrospect.
Jenson Beach is a great spot to stop ultimately, but very uncomfortable in 20+ knots from the east (or probably even worse from the south).
We might spend two nights here, and then we'll continue on to West Palm Beach. There is a possible weather window to cross to the Bahamas later this week, and we'll consider taking that if it ends up working out. But it's a ways out yet, so we'll see where we get and how that ends up materializing. Glad to finally be moving again!
